Critical Failure Mode
Zinsco breakers weld to the aluminum bus bar over time. The breaker handle moves to "off", but the circuit stays live. Ineligible with 22+ of 26 Florida carriers according to Augustyniak Insurance Group.
Why Zinsco Panels Fail
Zinsco manufactured electrical panels from the 1940s through the 1970s, when Sylvania acquired the company and continued producing the same design under the Sylvania name. The panels were widely installed in Florida homes built between 1960 and 1980.
The core problem is the aluminum bus bar. Zinsco breakers clip onto this bar from the side. Over decades, the aluminum oxidizes and the breaker clips corrode, causing them to physically weld to the bus. Once welded, the breaker cannot move, but the handle mechanism still moves freely. The result: a breaker that looks like it's off, but the circuit is still energized.
This failure mode creates two hazards: (1) overloaded circuits that cannot be de-energized, leading to overheating and fire, and (2) circuits that appear dead during electrical work but are still live, creating serious shock risk.
How to Identify a Zinsco Panel
- Panel door or interior label reads 'Zinsco' or 'Sylvania'
- Breakers are colorful, often red, green, blue, or yellow
- Breakers clip onto the bus bar from the side (not front-snap like modern breakers)
- Panel is located in a home built between 1950 and 1985
- The panel may also be labeled 'GTE-Sylvania' or 'Sylvania-Zinsco'

Zinsco Panels & Florida Homeowners Insurance
Zinsco and Sylvania-Zinsco panels are ineligible with the majority of Florida's private insurance carriers. According to Augustyniak Insurance Group, they are declined by 22 or more of the 26 carriers they represent. Homeowners with Zinsco panels are typically limited to Citizens Property Insurance or specialty surplus-lines carriers at significantly higher premiums.
If your panel fails a 4-point inspection, your insurer will typically give you 30–60 days to replace it before canceling your policy. We work with homeowners on tight timelines and can often schedule within 1–2 weeks.
