CPSC Recall #88-095
The CPSC recalled approximately 22 million Challenger GFCI breakers in 1988 for failing to trip on ground faults. Flagged by most Florida insurance carriers on 4-point inspections.
The Problem With Challenger Panels
Challenger Electric manufactured panels from the 1970s through the early 1990s. The brand has two documented issues that make it a concern for Florida homeowners and insurance carriers:
- 1
CPSC GFCI Recall (1988)
CPSC recall #88-095 covered approximately 22 million Challenger GFCI circuit breakers manufactured between 1983 and 1988. The recalled breakers could fail to trip when a ground fault occurred, posing a shock hazard. If your home has a Challenger panel from this era, it almost certainly contains recalled breakers.
- 2
Bus Bar Overheating
Field reports and electrician inspections have documented overheating at the bus bar connections in Challenger panels. Over time, this can cause arcing, melted insulation, and fire. The problem is often invisible from the outside, the panel looks normal while the bus connections are degrading inside.
How to Identify a Challenger Panel
- Panel door or interior label reads 'Challenger'
- Installed in homes built in the 1980s or early 1990s
- Breakers may be labeled 'Challenger' or have a distinctive gray color
- Panel may also be labeled 'Challenger Electric' or 'Challenger Technologies'

Challenger Panels & Florida Homeowners Insurance
Challenger panels are flagged by most Florida insurance carriers on 4-point inspections. Many carriers will decline to write or renew a policy on a home with a Challenger panel, or will require replacement within 30–60 days as a condition of continued coverage.
After we replace your panel, we provide a signed letter documenting the completed work. Your insurance agent can submit this to bind or reinstate your policy.
